This is a beautiful, Grade II listed house, with a number of fine, listed features such as its staircase and entrance hall. Located In the heart of Kensington and Chelsea, our client’s intent was the construction of a basement to provide additional space, while simultaneously opening up the lower ground floor and connecting this with the garden. Regulations in force in Kensington and Chelsea mean that a basement may be added to a Grade II listed property only if it is constructed beneath the garden. It may not be beneath the building itself.
The challenge for us as builders was to extend the rear of the lower ground floor of the property some way, creating a conservatory-like area which would open towards the garden. Within this extension we were able to position a spiral staircase descending into a modestly sized basement, providing the property owner with the desired additional space used for storage and as a home gym. In addition to completing this work, we also carried out extensive refurbishment to the rest of the house, working alongside our client’s interior designers to realise an imaginative and beautifully finished property.
